Nobody wants to look older than they are.

If you’re bald, the wrong habits can add years to your appearance without you even realizing it.

The good news is a few simple changes can make a big difference.

I’ve been bald for 20 years, and in that time, I’ve tested just about every trick out there.

Some advice works. Some of it is nonsense.

These days, people are surprised when I tell them my age because they assume I’m younger than I am.

I’m not claiming to have found the fountain of youth, but I do know what actually helps and what just wastes time.

If you want to keep looking youthful, avoid these mistakes.

1. Not Shaving Often Enough

When the hair on the back and sides grows out, it creates a noticeable contrast with your smooth scalp. This contrast is most noticeable in white guys with darker hair (like me, unfortunately).

It can also make you look older by making your hair loss more obvious. A quick shave every day or two keeps things clean and consistent.

2. Skipping Sunscreen

Your scalp needs protection from the sun just as much as your face does. Sun damage not only increases the risk of health issues but also makes your skin look older.

A lightweight sunscreen is a simple way to keep your head protected and healthy.  Even on days where I don’t apply it all over, I make sure my head has at least a thin layer of sunscreen to protect my scalp.

3. Forgetting to Moisturize

A dry scalp can end up looking flaky and aged. Regular moisturizing keeps the skin smooth, healthy and youthful.

It’s a small step, but it makes a big difference. Here’s a review of my moisturizer of choice.

4. Neglecting Facial Hair Grooming

Facial hair looks great if it’s well-groomed. When it’s not, it can add years to your look.

Keeping it trimmed and neat, whether it’s stubble or a full beard, helps define your features and gives a sharper, more youthful appearance.

Careful though – Certain beard styles suit bald men… and some really don’t!

5. Wearing Outdated or Ill-Fitting Glasses

Glasses should suit your face and be up-to-date in style. If they don’t fit well or look old-fashioned, they can make you look older.

Choosing the right pair of modern glasses that suit your face can take years off your appearance, especially when you’re bald.

Without hair to frame your face, your glasses become even more important as a focal point. Stylish, well-fitted frames can enhance your features and create a youthful, polished look that complements your bald head perfectly.

Here’s my detailed guide to choosing glasses that suit your features, whatever the shape of your bald head.

6. Dressing Without Thinking About Fit

Clothes that don’t fit well or look dated can make you appear older than you are.

Well-fitted, modern clothing doesn’t mean you have to follow trends. Even classic styles work well when they fit right and look fresh.

7. Not Watching Your Weight

Nobody should be made to feel bad about their body shape, but if you want to look younger, getting in shape is one of the best ways to do it.

Carrying extra weight can visually age you, especially when you’re bald.

But being underweight can be just as bad for your appearance. A skinny frame can make you seem unhealthy, while extra pounds can make it look like you don’t take care of yourself.

Building some muscle, especially in your chest and arms, gives you a balanced, strong appearance that pairs perfectly with a bald head.

A few strength workouts or cardio sessions can make a big difference.

If weight loss is the goal, focus on eating better and staying active. Even small changes, like cutting out sugary drinks or taking daily walks, can help.

A healthy, fit frame always makes bald men look younger, balancing out the aging effect of hair loss.

8. Overdoing Smoking or Drinking

Smoking speeds up skin aging and causes wrinkles, especially around your mouth. If hair loss is already aging you, adding to this by smoking is the last thing you need.

Alcohol also ages you by drying out your skin, causing puffiness, and creating uneven tone over time, which can make you look older than you are.

Cutting back on both can make a noticeable difference in your appearance.
