The beauty of using a head shaver is that there’s no learning curve, unlike with a blade. I remember the first time I used one, being impressed at how simple they are to use. I got a perfect head shave the first time, with no injuries.

Because of how a foil shaver works, you need to shave against the grain to get the best results. Shaving with the grain will just press the hair down into your head, the idea is to stand the hair up to allow it to slip into the holes in the foil where the blades can do their job.

Rotary shavers

On the other hand, rotary head shavers feature circular blades that move in a circular motion, capturing and cutting hair in a different way than foil shavers.

The rotating blades work independently, flexing and adjusting to the contours of the head. They’re known for speed, comfort, and ability to reduce irritation. 

Personally, I prefer rotary shavers because they can handle longer and thicker hair more effectively. I always get a more comfortable shave from a rotary shaver, whereas I find foil shavers quite aggressive and you can feel the blades working behind the thin metal barrier.

If you’re looking for a bargain, grab the Silver. For me, this is the leading bald head shaver on the market, and it’s my tool of choice when I don’t have time for a wet shave.

Having been shaving my head for nearly 20 years, I appreciate what makes a good electric shaver as I’ve used plenty in that time. I use this shaver at least once a week!

On the other hand, if price is less of a factor and you want all the bells and whistles, the Platinum is the best choice for you.

The Gold isn’t much of an upgrade on the Silver, while as you can see, the extras that come with the Pitbull Platinum (like the travel case) are ‘nice to haves’. It’s the extra hour of battery life on the Platinum that is the difference-maker.

The blades are different too (not necessarily better). The Pitbull Gold and Platinum come with the regular Forte blade. The Pitbull Silver comes with a Carver blade specially designed for coarse or thick hair.

I dismissed the Gold as I’m not sure who it would appeal to, and just focused on the premium Platinum model and the bargain Silver:

Pros

1. Price: The Pitbull Silver isn’t a cheap head shaver, but at around half the price of its big brother, the Platinum, it represents great value for money. I paid around $100 for mine and the use I’ve had from it combined with the quality of the shave makes it a great investment for that price.
2. Closeness: The Pitbull Silver delivers a near-razor-close shave. It feels like the day-after smoothness of a previous night’s wet shave. When short on time, skipping a full wet shave for this is a win in my book.
3. Comfort: Unlike some other head shavers, the Pitbull is surprisingly gentle on your scalp. The aggressive Andis Profoil, for example, has never left any cuts behind but I’ve always been able to feel the blades working against the scalp. The Pitbull is much more delicate.

4. Ergonomic design: The Skull Shaver’s design is ideal for head-shaving, as it’s almost impossible to drop even when you’re shaving tricky areas like the back of your head. Slotting between your fingers, the shaver sits in the palm of your hand, making shaving as effortless as rubbing your hand over your head.

5. Flexibility: Many shavers on this list have flexible heads. However, the Skull Shaver stands out thanks to its intricate design. The shaving head flexes with the contours of your scalp. The blade holders are also spring-mounted, ensuring added movement and a super-comfortable shave.
6. Easy to clean: The Skull Shaver easily disassembles for cleaning and reassembles after. Regular cleaning extends its lifespan. I brush out the hair after every shave, and while you can rinse it, submerging is off-limits.

7. Convenience: I bought the Pitbull to avoid going out with days-old hair growth when I lacked the time for a wet shave. The website and marketing materials boast about a ’90-second shave’. In reality, I spend 3-4 minutes ensuring I cover all areas of my scalp for an even shave, which is still pretty good.
8. Noise level: The Pitbull is quiet and just makes a sort of whirring sound rather than a deep buzz, which makes it sound futuristic if anything. When you press on harder there’s a slight squeal from the blades, which acts as a reminder only to apply gentle pressure.
9. Wet and dry use: The Skull Shaver can be used both wet and dry. However, it’s crucial to clean the blades after every use to prevent clogging from old shaving cream. Personally, I occasionally wet shave with mine. But mostly, I use it for quick shaves before heading out, saving the wet shave for when I have more time.
10. Cordless use: Unlike its rival the Remington Balder Pro, the Pitbull Silver can be used while charging, or cordless for up to 60 minutes. Not that you’d ever need it for that long unless you forget your charger on vacation.

Cons

• Battery life: This is only a con if you don’t charge your electricals frequently. As someone who panics if my phone battery goes below 70%, it’s not an issue for me as mine is plugged in after every use. However, you can’t get away from the fact that other head shavers on this list, like the close-cutting Andis Profoil, offer much longer cordless use.

The best bald head shaver not made by Skull Shaver is the Remington Balder Pro (also known as the RX5, depending on which country you’re in). In Europe, it’s the RX5, while in the States it’s known as the Balder Pro (which is much more fun).

Having been shaving my head for nearly 20 years, I appreciate what makes a good head shaver as I’ve used plenty in that time. This is the shaver that my barber uses on the rare occasions I visit!

Pros

1. Closeness: The Andis Profoil is the only head shaver I’ve found that provides a closer shave than even the Skull Shaver Pitbull. Its thin foil head means the blades achieve close contact with the scalp, ensuring a fantastic shave while preventing cuts and nicks.

2. Battery life: Given the cost of this shaver, the battery life is excellent. At 80 minutes of cordless use, it outperforms some of the more expensive shavers on this list.
3. Corded & cordless use: Even if you somehow manage the full 80 minutes without remembering to charge the shaver, your Profoil can be used while plugged in, so you won’t be left with half a shaved head.
4. Versatility: The Andis Profoil can be used as a face shaver and a head shaver. This means it can be a money-saver as you won’t have to buy two products for your head and face, whereas I wouldn’t recommend a rotary blade shaver like the Skull Shaver Pitbull for face-shaving, for example. (See note below)*

5. Grip: Unlike other iterations of the Profoil, Andis included a rubber grip on the 17200 which makes it much easier to handle. It’s not as ergonomic or easy to hold onto as the Skull Shaver, but this simple addition means it beats most other shavers of its kind.

6. Charging stand: The Profoil comes with a charging stand which the shaver simply sits in between uses. Admittedly my Skull Shaver just gets left on the floor while it charges, or on the end of my desk where it’s in constant danger of being knocked off and damaged. So, the addition of a stable charging stand is definitely a plus point for the Profoil.
7. Protective hard case: Included for safe storage and travel purposes.

Cons

1. Not suitable for sensitive scalps: If you have sensitive skin I wouldn’t recommend the Profoil for shaving your face. It’s a pretty aggressive shaver that is likely to cause irritation if repeatedly passed over sensitive areas.
2. Doesn’t work well on longer hair: The Andis Profoil is most effective on short hair, as longer hairs get flattened rather than entering the foil. If you often wait days between shaves, you’d need to pre-trim with clippers before using the Profoil.
3. Noisy: While not dangerously loud, the Profoil is one of the noisier shavers on this list. There’s a big difference between the gentle whirr of the Skull Shaver Pitbull I use at home, and the loud grinding of the Profoil my barber uses. Don’t let this put you off – even when shaving next to your ear, it’s not painfully or dangerously loud. But if you’re looking for a quiet shaver, the Profoil probably isn’t for you.
4. Flexibility: Unlike the Skull Shaver with its spring-mounted blades and flexible heads, the Profoil 17200 has a static shaving head. This means it won’t adapt to the contours of your head like other shavers on this list. Instead, you’ll have to manipulate the Profoil manually to get the closest shave possible. This means it’s not the most comfortable, but this is what you’re sacrificing for the closeness that the Profoil provides.
5. Not waterproof: The Profoil 17200 doesn’t offer wet/dry shaving capability, unlike others on this list that can be used in the shower and with shaving cream. It’s very good at what it does, but if you need the wet shave option I’d go for the Skull Shaver or the Balder Pro.

How to shave your head with an electric head shaver

Pre-shave prep

Make sure your shaver is fully charged for an efficient shave and to avoid a half-shaved head when the battery dies.

Start with a clean head to protect your shaver blades from dirt and oils. Shaving after your shower, when your scalp is clean and your hair is softened by hot water, is ideal.

Cleanse with a quality head wash to prevent blade build-up and reduce irritation risk. After washing, gently dry your scalp. 

Shaving technique

Begin at the top, progressing to the sides and back, using steady strokes without pressing too hard. An over-pressured shaver may squeal to let you know to chill out a bit.

While some recommend circular motions, long top-to-bottom strokes work best for me. Make sure you shave against the grain, particularly in tricky areas like cowlicks or unusual growth patterns.

Wipe off any leftover hairs with a towel.

Post-shave care
