There are plenty of alternatives to the Skull Shaver Pitbull – but which is the best?

Rating System – how I ranked each shaver

I’ve left out ‘closeness of shave’ because all rotary shavers give pretty much the same smooth finish. It’s like waking up the morning after a wet shave the night before – just a slight stubble when you rub your hand against the grain.

If you’re looking for closeness, choose a razor and take the time to wet shave. No head shaver comes anywhere near the smoothness of a blade. It’s the other features that make one stand out over the other, so I scored each head shaver on the following criteria:

  • Battery life
  • Usefulness of display
  • Easy to clean
  • Noise level
  • Additional features
  • Charging time
  • Wet/dry shaving capability
  • Availability of replacement heads

Each was scored out of 5 stars, other than the last two sections which were a simple yes/no (3 stars for a yes).

This contributed to a total score, which was then compared with the price at the time of writing to give a ‘value for money’ score from 1-5 stars.

Of course, in reality, other more long-term factors like long-term reliability and robustness determine true value for money. I was too heavy-handed with one of the shavers during my testing and actually broke it. I was just trying to detach the shaving head the wrong way.

Meanwhile, my Skull Shaver is still going strong.

The Pitbull gives the peace of mind that comes with a credible brand and product. But if you’re on a budget and looking for a bargain, here is your list of budget Skull Shaver alternatives:

King of the budget-friendly substitutes for the Pitbull, the Kibiy Upgrade 5-in-1 Head Shaver is my top recommendation. If you disagree, I’d love to hear about it in the comments section below!

To be honest I was skeptical at first. Just like supermarket own brand food, sometimes the original is the best. But sometimes the cheaper alternatives do a great job. In the same way, this bargain head shaver has me convinced. and here’s why:

Battery Life: Clocking in at 90 minutes of shaving time, the Kibiy matches the Skull Shaver Pitbull, iwoole, and Kensen 7D in terms of cordless use. It outlasts the Bald Buddy by a good 15 minutes.

Display: With its intelligent LED display, the Kibiy offers a clear, visible way to keep an eye on your battery life.

The Kibiy Upgrade's display
The Kibiy Upgrade’s intelligent display

It’s similar to the Skull Shaver Platinum’s illuminated LCD, putting it clear of shavers with basic red/green battery indicators.

Ease of Cleaning: The Kibiy is rated IPX7 waterproof, which means it can be submerged for up to 30 minutes. Skull Shaver products are only rated IPX5 (fine to run under the tap/shower).

This gives the Kibiy a slight edge in terms of ease of cleaning but it doesn’t make a massive difference. Both are easy to disassemble to clean the individual parts.

Noise Level: Quiet operation is a welcome feature in shavers, as nobody likes to get their eardrums blasted with the screech of shaver blades. Similarly, my wife doesn’t appreciate being woken up by a noisy shaver in the mornings.

The Kibiy Upgrade head shaver

The Kibiy doesn’t disappoint and is easily on par with the Skull Shaver and equally quiet Bald Buddy.

Additional Features: The 5-in-1 design of the Kibiy makes it versatile. It comes with attachments like a nose/ear trimmer, facial cleansing brush, and a face massager.

The Kibiy Upgrade’s impressive range of attachments

It also comes with a travel lock, which is handy for someone like me, who has noticed an embarrassing buzzing in my bag before now and realized I’ve accidentally nudged my shaver into ‘on’ mode.

All these features are practical, whereas the Skull Shaver’s additional rinse stand and travel case are desirable, rather than essential.

Charging Time: The Kibiy reaches full charge in just 1.5 hours, making it the fastest on the list. It beats the Pitbull Platinum’s 2.5-hour charge time by a whole hour.

Wet/Dry Shaving: Like the Skull Shaver, the Kibiy supports both wet and dry shaving. As mentioned, it can even survive being submerged underwater for 30 minutes.

Replacement Heads: Just like most shavers in the comparison, Kibiy’s replacement heads are readily available on Amazon. So you can keep using the shaver even after the original blades start to blunt.

Summary: With all these features clocking in at less than $40 (at the time of writing), the Kibiy blows the competition away.

Shpavver Strong Shaver

Shpavver Strong Shaver

  • 90 minutes cordless use
  • LED display shows remaining battery
  • Wet/dry shaving capability
  • All-in-one grooming solution

This Amazon-only alternative to the famed Skull Shaver Pitbull does surprisingly well:

Battery Life: With a battery life of 90 minutes, the Shpavver Strong Shaver rivals the Pitbull Platinum for cordless use. This means you have more than enough use time for multiple shaves sessions before needing a recharge.

Note: I did notice during testing that the time remaining on the display was going down faster than I was using it. This means the 90 minute battery life might not be 100% accurate.

Display: The Shpavver has an impressive LED display, which puts my Pitbull Silver to shame with its basic red/green battery light. The Shpavver will show an indication of remaining battery life (see above for caveats).

Ease of Cleaning: Like the Kibiy, the Shpavver is IPX7 Waterproof. This means you can use it with foam or water, and even submerge it for up to 30 minutes. The shaving head has a magnetic release to allow ease of access to rinse the blades.

Noise Level: I found the Shpavver nice and quiet, similar to the Skull Shaver.

Shpavver Strong Shaver
The Shpavver Strong Shaver

Additional Features: The Shpavver comes with a nose and ear hair trimmer, facial massager, and cleaning brush. It’s an all-in-one grooming solution for less than $40.

Charging Time: While the Skull Shaver takes 2.5 hours for a full charge, the Shpavver speeds ahead with just 1.5 hours of charging time.

Wet/Dry Shaving: No issues with wet shaving. Use it in the shower and with shave cream if you want a slightly smoother and more comfortable shave.

Availability of Replacement Heads: Replacement heads for the Shpavver are readily available on Amazon.com.

Summary: The Shpavver’s combination of a robust blade design, quick charging time, and its LED intelligent display make it a contender. I was a little too heavy-handed and ended up breaking it, but if you’re looking for a budget-friendly head shaver and you’re less clumsy than me, go for it.

iwoole Head Shaver

iwoole Head Shaver

  • 90 minutes cordless use
  • Fully waterproof for easy cleaning
  • Wet/dry shaving capability
  • Fantastic value for money

The iwoole shaver is a basic model. But it appears higher than its features would suggest because it’s the cheapest head shaver on the list.

With head shavers, you get what you pay for. It lacks the bells and whistles of some of the other models, but it’s the only shaver under $30 (at the time of writing).

Battery Life: Both iwoole and Skull Shaver Pitbull sport a 90-minute battery life, which is impressive given the iwoole’s price. It offers more cordless use than the Bald Buddy at close to half the price.

Display: iwoole only offers the basic red/green LED indicator. That’s a big step down from the Pitbull Platinum’s detailed illuminated LCD display. But let’s not forget this shaver is available for just 15% of the price of the Platinum. Some things are worth compromising on for a bargain.

Ease of Cleaning: iwoole’s shaver impresses with an IPX7 Waterproof rating, meaning the full body of the device can be submerged for cleaning. Skull Shaver goes one further and offers a rinse stand for easy cleaning. That’s the extra value you’re paying that high price for.

Noise Level: iwoole isn’t too noisy, maybe slightly louder than the quieter Pitbull. But it’s still comparable with the more expensive Bald Buddy.

iwoole head shaver
The iwoole Head Shaver

Additional Features: iwoole’s main selling points is its 5-in-1 functionality. This makes it as versatile as the Kibiy Upgrade and Shpavver models in terms of extra head attachments.

Charging Time: Both iwoole and the Pitbull require about 2 hours for a full charge. This is relatively standard across this list, with a few exceptions offering slightly quicker or slower charge times.

Wet/Dry Shaving: The iwoole is ideal for both wet and dry shaving, similar to the Pitbull. This dual capability is a common feature among our Skull Shaver replacements.

Replacement Heads: iwoole owners can buy replacement heads on Amazon when the blades lose their sharpness.

Summary: the iwoole shaver might be a tad noisier than the Pitbull’s, but the feature-to-price ratio makes it an absolute bargain.

Bald Buddy

Bald Buddy

  • 75 minutes cordless use
  • Easy to clean
  • Wet/dry shaving capability
  • Travel lock
  • USB-C charging

The Bald Buddy is a cool brand with a great design. But, the high cost and some shortcomings keep it from ranking higher among Pitbull alternatives.

Battery Life: Bald Buddy offers the shortest amount of cordless use at just 75 minutes. Skull Shaver and the other options all clock in at 90 minutes, for a lower price.

Display: The Bald Buddy features an LED light that lights up when the device is on. It also has a battery indicator that lights up while charging and goes off when fully charged. This is pretty rudimentary but serves its purpose, I guess.

Ease of Cleaning: Cleaning the Bald Buddy is a breeze. The device can be run underwater both during and after each shaving session. Although the Skull Shaver Pitbull offers a quick rinse stand, Bald Buddy’s full washability is handy to have.

Noise Level: The Bald Buddy is pretty quiet and matches the noise level of the Pitbull.

Additional Features: Bald Buddy’s standout features are the travel lock, USB-C charging, and the fact that it can handle multiple voltages.

Charging Time: A full charge takes two hours, which actually beats the Skull Shaver. However, Kibiy’s head shaver leads the way for a lower price with a fast charge time of just 90 minutes.

Wet/Dry Shaving: Bald Buddy is waterproof and can operate both wet and dry, just like the Pitbull.

Replacement Heads: Bald Buddy advises replacing the shaver head every 3-6 months but this seems excessive to me. But, at least the replacement heads are available on Amazon.

Summary: Sorry Bald Buddy, but if you’re going to charge almost $50 then you need to offer more than the models that come in cheaper.

Kensen 7D Head Shaver

Kensen 7D Head Shaver

  • 90 minutes cordless use
  • Intelligent LED digital display
  • USB-C charging

Bringing up the rear is the somewhat overpriced Kensen 7D Head Shaver.

The main reason I fell out with this model is that it claims to be waterproof and suitable for wet shaving. However, the manual states that it’s for dry shaving only and the casing doesn’t protect the motor from getting wet.

Even the Amazon listing has (badly) PhotoShopped images of guys using it in the shower!

Kensen wet shaving image
The manual for Kensen’s head shaver states it should be used for dry shaving only

Battery Life: One plus point for this shaver is the impressive 90-minute battery life. This puts it ahead of the Bald Buddy, and on par with most other alternatives, including the Pitbull Platinum.

Display: The Kensen 7D comes with an intelligent LED digital display that shows the remaining battery percentage. This is an improvement on the basic red/green indicator on the iwoole, although the Kensen is more expensive.

Ease of Cleaning: The Kensen shaver is IPX6 waterproof. So, while it can’t be submerged, it does claim to resist high-powered jets, including your shower head. However, it’s hard to trust this given the ambiguity discussed above over the wet/dry capabilities.

Noise Level: The Kensen 7D Head Shaver has an average noise level. I’d place it between the quieter Pitbull and the slightly louder Bald Buddy. It’s far from painful, but it doesn’t seem to be difficult for its competitors to quiet down the whirring of their blades.

Additional Features: The Kensen 7D’s additional features include the convenience of USB-C charging. While the Skull Shaver Pitbull Platinum includes a rinse stand and travel case, it is, of course, much more expensive than the Kensen.

Kensen 7D Head Shaver
The Kensen 7D Head Shaver

Charging Time: The Kensen 7D holds its own with a USB quick charge time of two hours. This puts it in the middle of the range on this list.

This is slightly shorter than the Pitbull’s 2.5-hour charging time, but longer than the ultra-quick 90 minutes of our winner, the Kibiy.

Wet/Dry Shaving: As covered, the online listing says the Kensen offers wet/dry shaving, and the manual advises the opposite. Not a great look, especially when you consider that every other shaver on this list offers the choice of a comfortable wet shave.

Replacement Heads: Many of the universal shaver head replacements on Amazon will fit the Kensen.

Summary: A tale of what could have been. For almost $46, you’d expect much better. Hopefully, Kensen clears up the ambiguity with the wet/dry capabilities.

What to Look for in a Skull Shaver Alternative

The following are the defining features that I’ve used to compare and score each shaver:

  • Battery Life: The more cordless use, the better. This ensures it lasts long enough for multiple shaves before needing a recharge.
  • Usefulness of Display: A useful display that indicates battery status and other essential information is better than a basic red/green battery indicator light
  • Easy to Clean: Look for head shavers that are simple to clean and maintain

The Skull Shaver Pitbull is easy to take apart and rinse
  • Noise Level: A quieter shaver gives a nicer shaving experience
  • Additional Features: Look for extras like multi-functional heads, rinse stands, and trimmer attachments
  • Charging Time: A faster charge can be crucial for baldies who are on-the-go
  • Wet/Dry Shaving Capability: Make sure you have the option to shave in the shower or use shave cream for a closer cut
  • Replacement Heads Available: Check for the availability and cost of replacement heads when your blades start to blunt

FAQs

Is it safe to use these head shavers in the shower?

While many of the shavers on this list are waterproof and suitable for wet shaving, always double-check the manufacturer’s instructions before using any electronic device in the shower.

How often should I replace the shaver heads?

Most manufacturers recommend replacing shaver heads every few months, but this can vary based on usage. Always monitor blade sharpness and replace them if you notice a decrease in performance or any discomfort while shaving.

Can I buy replacement heads from other brands or should they be brand-specific?

While some universal shaver heads may fit multiple brands, it’s always best to buy replacement heads from the specific brand or those recommended by the brand to ensure the best fit and performance.

How should I clean and maintain my head shaver to extend its lifespan?

Regular cleaning under running water after each shave is essential. For those models that aren’t waterproof, wiping the blades with a damp cloth or using the provided cleaning brush is advisable. It’s also recommended to keep the shaver in a dry place and charge it regularly.

Are there any warranty or return policies I should be aware of when purchasing these alternatives?

Warranty and return policies vary by manufacturer and retailer. It’s always a good idea to check these details before making a purchase to ensure you’re covered in case of defects or dissatisfaction.

Summary

There are a range of alternatives to the Skull Shaver Pitbull for anyone looking to save money. The Kibiy though, is the best of the bunch.

The main thing to bear in mind is that Skull Shaver is a credible brand, and buying cheaper alternatives always comes with risk.

Plus, the performance of cheaper alternatives can often decline over time. I already broke one of the shavers on this list, and durability is a worry in the long term.

On the other hand, you could find that your bargain head shaver lasts years before needing to be replaced.

For me, the Pitbull Silver is a happy medium. It’s still more expensive than any of the models on this list, but only half the price of the Platinum for a very comparable shaving experience.

You honestly don’t need all the bells and whistles that come with the Platinum. Even the more detailed display is a ‘nice-to-have’.

Those looking for a bargain should grab the Kibiy, but I think the smart money is on the Pitbull Silver.

Skull Shaver Pitbull Silver

  • Super close shave
  • 90 seconds and done
  • Quiet operation
  • Ergonomic design
  • Great value for money
  • 10% off with code ‘HAPPY’ (US) or ‘Appreciation’ (outside US)
